READING TIME: 5 minutes

When it comes to seating your guests at a formal wedding reception, having a clear seating plan is essential. But how do you present it?

That’s where tableau de mariage and escort cards come in. But are they the same thing? Can you use them interchangeably?

Static vs. mobile: the key difference

The biggest difference between a tableau de mariage and escort cards is in their functionality:

  • A tableau de mariage is a static display that guests consult to find their assigned table;

  • Escort cards, on the other hand, are individual place cards that guests pick up and take with them to their seat (hence the name “escort”).

How They Work

Both options follow a similar structure for organizing guest names:

  1. Alphabetically – Listing guest names in order, followed by their table name or number.

  2. By Table – Grouping guests by table to show who will be sitting together.

Regardless of your choice, table numbers or names at the tables themselves are crucial, and individual place cards may also be used to designate exact seats.

Choosing Based on Table Setup

The choice between a tableau de mariage and escort cards can depend on your reception seating layout:

  • For long banquet-style (imperial) tables, escort cards are often the best option, as they make it easier to direct guests to specific seats in an orderly fashion.

  • For round or single tables, a tableau de mariage is more common, allowing guests to find their assigned table but choose their own seat.

However, there’s no strict rule—you can mix and match! Some couples opt for a tableau with table names and then add place cards at the table itself for extra clarity.

Design & Presentation

When it comes to style, the possibilities are endless! Think beyond traditional boards. Why not use:

  • Elegant wooden frames or hanging displays;

  • Fun escort cards attached to a glass of prosecco or mini bottles of limoncello

  • A floral or rustic setup with handwritten calligraphy

The key is to choose something that matches your wedding aesthetic while remaining clear and easy to read.

Functionality First!

While a beautiful display is always a plus, clarity is the most important factor. Whether you go for a tableau or escort cards, make sure guests can easily find their spot without confusion.

Because at the end of the day, your guests should spend less time figuring out where to sit and more time celebrating with you!
