Sketching Double Happiness: A Modern Wedding Inspired by Chinese Tradition

Some weddings tell stories that go beyond design: they whisper tales of love, heritage, and shared vision.
This is one of them.

When we met L. and S., we were immediately struck by their warmth. She, from China, graceful and full of spark; he, Italian, cheerful and kind. Their joy was infectious, and our work together quickly became something more than professional: a creative path shaped by mutual trust, shared ideas and some aperitifs here and there.

From the very beginning, she had a clear idea in mind: a palette of white and gold, elegant and serene, a modern take on Chinese wedding symbolism, without excess or cliché. During one of our first meetings, she shared the story behind the “Double Happiness” symbol — — used in Chinese culture to celebrate marriage: “two identical signs, joined like hearts in harmony, a symbol of joy multiplied, and a love made twice as deep.”

We knew right away: this had to be the heart of their wedding.

From Sketch to Story: Designing with Purpose

Inspired by this ancient symbol, we began our design phase with intent and sensitivity. The graphic suite was crafted with white handmade paper, delicately deckled edges, and hot-pressed gold foil to give the symbol of Double Happiness its due light. The white-on-gold version adorned the envelope, reversed in negative space, each card was finished with a gold tassel, a nod to traditional Chinese aesthetics, reinterpreted in a minimal, modern key.

For the ceremony, we designed a semi-circular floral arch: soft, organic, and subtly majestic. The floral palette echoed the paper suite — white, blush, and gentle gold — creating a sense of continuity and calm sophistication.

Our spouses also wanted to surprise their guests with thoughtful, beautiful favors. We had custom tea and favor boxes made by hand, in pale pink with the Double Happiness symbol delicately stamped in gold foil. The final effect? Personal, meaningful, and completely theirs.

Interpreting Symbolism with Care

As designers and planners, we believe that beauty comes from meaning and sometimes, the most powerful design element is a story well told.

The symbol of Double Happiness wasn’t just decorative. It was a thread that connected paper, palette, florals and gifts. But to bring it to life, we took time to understand its cultural depth, exploring its origins and significance.
The idea was not to simply replicate but to interpret with respect, care and the quiet elegance that defines our work.

A Day of True Joy

L. and S. were radiant, surrounded by love and the quiet sophistication of a design that truly reflected them. The atmosphere was joyful, intimate, and gracefully celebratory: the perfect embodiment of their “double happiness”.
